What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique began its development over a century ago when FM Alexander (1865-1955), an Australian actor, developed a problem with his voice. Of course as an actor this was disastrous for him. When doctors could not help him he decided to try to find out for himself what was wrong and how to put it right. After spending much time observing himself in mirrors as he spoke or recited, he discovered a principle in nature that affects all vertebrates - he found that the relationship of the neck to the head and the head to the back is of primary importance in achieving a coordinated, well balanced body.

Alexander called this the ‘Primary Control’ and we can see in children, and in animals, that this neck-head-back relationship works well, allowing a natural poise and ease of movement.  Unfortunately, as we experience pressure and stress in our lives, we lose this instinctive good coordination and we then tend to shorten and tighten, which can cause far-reaching problems for our health - both mentally and physically. This shortening and tightening then becomes a habit and starts to feel ‘right’.  But in fact it is the culmination of our doing the ‘wrong’ thing with ourselves over time.

As FM Alexander himself said:

“If you stop doing the wrong thing the right thing will do itself.”

The Alexander Technique lets us experience the ‘right’ thing and teaches us how to stop interfering with our natural functioning.  As such, we can learn to 'use' ourselves to better advantage in all our daily activity.

So the Technique can help everyone to live a more balanced and fulfilling life.  It is a highly practical method for self-improvement and self-help.  Everyone can benefit and it has been learned and used by people from all walks of life.
